ROMANO LEAFS THROUGH THE PAGES, each revealing a fresh wash of sepia and ultramarine, ocher and vermilion, indigo and amber. Each also noticeably out of sequence. Page three follows page seventeen. Page five hundred and twenty-two follows page eleven. And so on. The edges are worn and crumpled with a folded corner here and an absent-minded notation there.
Quick scribbles of arrows, blocks and vivid circles of multi-colored inks hurriedly penned by multiple hands appear in the margins. Several attempt categorization with cryptic doodles and scrawls. He turns to a yellowing page washed with a cube of rich brown and ripened plum. He taps the color with his finger, causing the cube to bubble and ripple.
‘The shadow of the angel’s hand,’ he says, ‘is as dark as the skin of the charcoal vendor and as light as the flutter of the butterfly’s wing, evaporating with a forgotten touch into a powder-fine dust.’
One of 28 letters from Romano Fonseca’s 19th century translation of The Alphabet of Angels by the late Italo Calvino. This unusual collection of spiritual texts has been meticulously transposed from its original context and updated by The Curators in a limited edition of 12 prints.
Each print includes a Certificate of Authenticity and is signed and numbered by The Curators.
