A PULSE OF LIGHT SHINES through the window. Romano squints. He rubs his eyes and turns the page, curling the soft parchment.
“Before all beginnings,” he explains, “lives another beginning. The beginning of beginnings.” His eyelids close. “Creation creates itself. Seen and unseen. Light from light. A slice of earth. Planets made of single grains of sand, moons of falling drops of rain, stars of swaying blades of grass, clouds of flowing lead, oceans of swollen sapphires, fields of emerald sound, rivers of molten crystal, the broken orbits of castaway moons, ancient beams of bending light, the heavy cracks of a frozen sun, the sudden weight of a falling sky, winds of stone and meridian lines of bronze, hot and cold at once, neither day nor night, light nor dark, folding under the weight of an arc of earth, a single, yes, a single bend of night. Who am I and who are you and who are we and who will we be, if anything less than a grain of sand, a bend of sunlight reaching the closing line of a paragraph. Warm to the touch.”
One of 28 letters from Romano Fonseca’s 19th century translation of The Alphabet of Angels by the late Italo Calvino. This unusual collection of spiritual texts has been meticulously transposed from its original context and updated by The Curators in a limited edition of 12 prints.
